Class Description:
This will be a somewhat instructional drama class which will be presenting the musical, “The Sound of Music.” The performance dates are scheduled for May 21 - 23, 2010, however this is subject to change depending on venue (2nd choice: 5/14-16/2010; 3rd choice: 5/29-31/2010)!    Keep your schedule clear those weeks! Rehearsals will be at least the afternoons of 5/11, 5/14, and 5/18, and probably the evening of 5/19 and 5/20, and probably the morning of 5/21.  There will also be rehearsals on January19 & 26, 2010.  We expect to have either 3 or 4 performances.

**Please visit the following link: http://explorersdramaclub.org/20092010DramaClubInformation874.aspx

to see more information about drama next year, including what requirements will be made of students and families, in order for the production to run.  ***Please make sure you have read this information before committing to this production!!!  The class will include some instruction on drama technique, terminology, stage direction, vocal skills, etc., but will focus on preparing the play for production. Auditions will take place during the summer – please watch your e-mail after sign up for details.  The youngest 2 or 3 von Trapp kids will be cast in December or January, from siblings of other cast members, and will join us for rehearsals during January and second semester. The youngest 2 Von Trapps may be cast with two actors each, in order to prevent burn-out and meltdown during rehearsals and performances.

Students may also assist with backstage preparations (costumes, sets, props) when they are not acting during a class session.  Rehearsals outside of normal class time will be required, especially closer to the date of performance. Participation in fundraising (4 hours of parental help per family, plus 6 hours of help per student) will be required. Students should not expect to keep their costumes at the end of the performance. Drama is a very labor-intensive subject, and some parental help will be required, especially closer to the date of the performance.  Each family will be required to provide a parent to help backstage at one of the shows, help strike the set, plus 10 hours of other help.  Parents will be required to arrange for or make their student’s costume.  There will be some help and guidance provided, but do not expect that your costume will be completely produced for you!  We will coordinate with the forensics team schedule so there will not be conflicts.  Cast members’ families will need tickets to see the performances. However, the anticipated $40-50 class fee for second semester includes $20 worth of tickets for each student, and a stage makeup kit, which the students will keep, for hygiene reasons.  Students may use their tickets, give them away, or sell them.  Tickets cost $5 each, with a max of $20 (4 tickets) per immediate family per show.  This is for immediate family only, not grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc.

Even though “The Sound of Music” is a musical, there are plenty of non-singing roles available for those who want them, especially guys.

Leanne Wade has been the Explorers drama director for one year, and a forensics coach for four years. She is an alumna of the International Thespian Society.

Carol Keith was a UM musical theater major, who also was a certified K-12 music teacher.

Norma Polk has a fine arts degree from Carnegie Mellon University and has designed sets and costumes for many productions, for several different groups.

Samantha Negri has experience with event planning and advertising.

Class Description:
This course is designed to be the last science course the student takes before high school biology. Thus, we generally recommend it as an 8th grade course. However, if your student was recently in public school, he or she might need to wait until 9th grade to use it. The course discusses such topics as the atmosphere, the hydrosphere, weather, the structure of the earth, environmentalism, the physics of motion, Newton’s Laws, gravity, and astrophysics. The author especially concentrates on the myths generated by the hysterical environmentalist movement. There are many hands-on experiments to do, and they all use household chemicals and supplies. It is an excellent course for preparing the student to take a college-prep high school science curriculum.

Homework:
(some of this is a change from last year!!!):
Students will need to practice outside of class. MS students will be required to attend one summer workshop. A $15 fee for this workshop is included in your MS class fee. Certain preparation will need to be done prior to the workshop, and between the workshop and the first day of class. HSers who want to attend the workshop may also do so, for $15.  Students cannot sufficiently prepare for competition if they ONLY do forensics during class, one hour per week. Second semester MS and HS students will be required to attend the January workshop, probably on 01-05-10. A $15 fee for this workshop will be included in your 2nd semester class fee. Certain preparation will need to be done prior to the workshop, and between the workshop and the first day of class.

Prerequisites:
None – public speaking is a skill that anyone can learn
Class Description:
An Explorers forensics class/team even happening is contingent on at least one other coach stepping forward for EACH class hour. If two coaches step forward for one of the hours, we could open the class size to 18 students, as it was this year. Otherwise, we will only be at 12 students per hour. If no other coaches step forward, we MIGHT be able to have a small team, or maybe just a MS or just a HS team. HOWEVER, it would be half the size and would cost about twice as much per student.

The two semesters are independent for MS students, as there are two competitions – one in December and one in April. For HS students, this is a year-long class.  There will not be any HS competitions until 2nd semester, but joining 2nd semester would require special permission of the coach, AND would be contingent on spaces being available in the class, which there may very well not be.  MIFA has not yet posted tournament dates for 2009 – 2010.

This class will help students improve their public speaking and acting skills in a fun and exciting way by preparing for competition in the Michigan Interscholastic Forensics Association Middle Level Tournament (competition not required) in December or early January (date tbd by MIFA).  The following event categories are available for competition: Dramatic Interpretation, Duo Interpretation, Poetry Interpretation, Prose Interpretation, Storytelling, Extemporaneous Speaking, Impromptu Speaking, Informative Speaking, Original Oratory, and Sales Speaking.  Also, for HS only, is Broadcasting. Each team is allowed up to four entries in each event for MS tournaments, and 2 per event for HS.  A MS student is only allowed to compete in one event per semester, and HS students do one event for the whole year.  Some events, such as informative speaking, may require students to prepare visual aids and/or a demonstration.  These materials are not part of your class fee. Some further parental involvement will be requested as we approach the tournament dates.  More information can be found at www.themifa.org (see Individual Events).

The following info is a CHANGE from last year:

Each parent will be required to assist in one class two times per semester.

This is mandatory.

One parent from each HS family will be required to either judge, or hire a judge, for ONE of the invitational tournaments, and will also be required to attend one other invitational tournament. Judging is not as difficult as it sounds, and helping in class will be plenty of preparation for you. You may choose to judge only Public Address, only Interpretation, or both. If you choose to hire a judge, it typically varies from $75 – 100 per tournament, depending on how many rounds there are, and you MAY be able to hire another Explorers parent to judge for you.

Instructor Bio:

Leanne Wade has extensive experience with drama, and has coached forensics teams for the past 4 years.
